Stop celebrating your successes !!
Even though it's the thing we're always told to do, if you're a perfectionist, then all it will do is make matters worse.
Why?
Because perfectionism is a belief that our self-worth is connected to the quality of what we produce.
Our educational system, which focuses predominantly on exam results, teaches us that if we do well in our work, then we are good people. And thus the opposite belief can start to form, that a bad result means that I am bad.
Celebrating any form of win - a top mark in class, getting a new client, hitting your sales target – all help to reinforce the same belief.
So stop it.
Instead, celebrate your mistakes. Your failures.
In truth, we want to celebrate the efforts made – irrespective of the outcome – but to get to that point, start by celebrating your mistakes.
Think about it. If you are a perfectionist, you are aiming to be the best you can be.
Which means that when we make mistakes and fail, we have just discovered an opportunity to improve.
Brilliant. That's exactly what we want.
Now we can be actively seeking out the failures because they are the signposts taking us towards the place we want to be.
Now that is worth celebrating.
